WHAT IS ART-NET?

Art-Net is used to communicate between "nodes" (for example, smart lighting fixtures) and a "server" (a lighting console or a general-purpose computer running lighting control software).
Art-Net is a simple implementation of the DMX512-A protocol that transmits lighting control information in IP packets, typically over Ethernet, which is a private local area network. Supported functions include transmitting and receiving lighting data (for example, fader levels for individual lights, positions of moving lights), node detection, updating node control parameters, and transmitting time codes, along with functions that allow nodes to "subscribe" to "publisher" nodes.
Art-Net is generated by a lighting controller that produces serial signals to a light fixture connected to the output of a lighting controller or PC. Each DMX-compatible light fixture has a DMX input and a DMX output. While the lighting controller acts as the master, the light fixture operates as a slave to the controller, and as a master to the next light fixture it connects to. This creates a master-slave system in which light fixtures are chained and the lighting controller can address each one.
